Success With Succulents!

We get asked so often what’s the best way to look after succulents. Our advice? They prefer to be slightly neglected…

Don’t over water and when you do give them a drink do not saturate the lower leaves otherwise they will rot. Use a watering can with a narrow spout so you can target where you want the water to go. (we sell a stainless steel one that is ideal). Water every 1 to 2 weeks in the spring and summer and every 3-4 weeks in the winter. If you underwater the soil will dry out and the under leaves will become crispy and wrinkle, if you over water the leaves will become transparent and yellow and the plant could develop spots on the stem.

Don’t mist succulents with water – they won’t like it.

Natively succulents grow in warm climates, so avoid keeping them in a cold, draughty spot.

Succulents love natural day light, but newly planted succulents can scorch in direct sunlight.

Succulents don’t like to sit in water logged soil, so ensure they have good drainage in the pot and when potting up use cactus soil or mix potting soil with sand, pumice, grit or perlite. Succulent roots are very fragile so be gentle when repotting.
